Reminder on sign ups and other things to be mindful of.

Signups for Pick up games
Effective 3/20/2017 each player may only sign up for ONE pick up game per week. Exceptions to the rule are as follows:

1. Said player is playing goalie in one game and as a runner in the other
2. Said player is part of the clubs management
3. By Friday of the week of the games if there are still vacancies then said player may then sign up for a 2nd game.

This new rule should allow more players to get in the games. In the past our club wasn’t as large so this was never a concern. We have a larger group now and it is not fair for some players to get to play two games and others not to be able to play at all.

In addition to this goalies who only play the goalie position should always be given priority on the goalie spots.

In the event that our games fill up then the club management will consider opening up an 11am game.

Court Etiquette

- Clean up after yourselves after the game. Bottles go in trash, make sure you have all your personal items before you leave.

- Stop spitting on the court!
Spit over the sides through the fence and in the grass (not where people are walking and NOT on the court). We don’t want to step in your loogie or have the ball roll through it.

- Remember to bring your shirts/jerseys
We all rush out the door half awake and forget something. Try to pack a white shirt and a color or dark shirt the night before. For the league some teams will have team shirts but more information on that will be provided when the league is closer to start.

-Ball collection
We lose a lot of hockey balls. If you’re on the bench and a ball goes out of play go get it before we forget about it. I encourage players who are not actively playing to be the ones that go fetch the balls. It’s just easier this way so the guys playing don’t have to time a shift or rush a search. Also take a minute to look around the parking lots before you leave for any hockey balls hit out during the game.

- Mind your volume
We play early in the morning and are right next to a retirement community and townhouses. We are technically playing before the park is officially open. In the 9 years I’ve been doing this I’ve never had the cops called on us for noise pollution. Regardless I don’t want there to be a first. So with that said please just mind your volume especially before the 8am game starts.

-Physicality
Our games are not supposed to be rough even though Hockey can be a rough sport. The game can get physical especially when battling in the corner or in front of the net. When I say physical I’m referring to using your body to gain positioning to get better access to the ball. That doesn’t mean you barrel through a player or slash or crosscheck them. It’s intended to be a clean game and this year I’m going to have even less of a tolerance for dirty play and needless hits. I will tell you to sit, if not go home if I see these behaviors. Fact is if you’re going to get that emotional about rec hockey then take up a non contact sport. There should be no checking and no open court hip checks. Not sure why some of you think this is allowed.

You may laugh or smile but I’m dead serious. One heat of the moment temper tantrum can lead to an injury or hospitalization. That can jeopardize the entire club from playing ever again. Don’t fuck up what I’ve spent 9 years building. As I said I will have zero tolerance and this is your warning whether you read it or not. I heard about someone throwing crosschecks because they lost a board battle in this past Sundays game. That is the type of behavior I’m referring to.

- Scoresheet and controversial goals
The scoresheet is tough to track if you’re a player involved in the game. If you’re a spectator then help out if you can. There are also going to be shots that hit the post that are debated if it’s a goal or not. We should defer to a spectator to give the final decision. This is just the cut and dry way to deal with it. If anyone wants to be a volunteer ref that is fine. Just make that clear before the game starts so both teams know what to expect.

- Sportsmanship
Be respectful to your teammates and competition. Not all of us are the same skill level. We are all trying to learn and get better so understand this before you let the frustration get the best of you. I get why some of us are critical and it’s not because any of you are bad people. Let’s just be mindful of it because our judgement doesn’t add value to the game.
